Tooth damage is common among adults and kids alike. While there could be many causes for this – such as decay, infection, accidental or sports injury, these need not be a life sentence and there are ways to take care of it. Modern dentistry offers many options restore the form and function of your teeth in most cases. After tooth fillings, dental crowns and bridges are a popular long-term option available for patients with severely damaged teeth.
Both dental crowns and dental bridges are fixed prosthetic devices, which are cemented over the existing tooth structure. These are custom made to resemble your natural teeth, and once in place, would look no different from your other teeth, making them a procedure of choice among dentists and patients.
When does one need Dental Crowns?
Dental crowns, or caps as they are also known, are intended to be crowned over existing teeth. These can be made of metal, ceramic or a combination of both, and are made to resemble your natural teeth. They are usually used to cover and protect weak teeth and prevent further structural damage. Our dentist might recommend a crown in any of the following cases:
- Improving the appearance of a severely discoloured tooth
- Supporting a heavily filled tooth, and protect them from further damage
- Protecting a root canal tooth from further bacterial infection
- Protecting injured or fractured teeth from further impact

When does one need Dental Bridges?
Dental bridges are permanent prosthetic devices, which are used to bridge the gap of one or more missing teeth in between two healthy teeth. One could also say that these serve as replacements for missing teeth. Depending on the number of missing teeth to be filled, a bridge might have one or more artificial teeth, which would be supported by the adjacent healthy teeth. These are usually made of porcelain and metal for added strength and durability, and are mounted over the existing teeth, and cemented into place.
We offer two types of dental bridges at our clinic near Hampton Park – conventional bridges which would require the adjacent teeth to be prepared to allow a proper fit for the bridge, as well as implant-based bridges, which would be mounted over implants, placed surgically.
Both crowns and bridges would take a minimum of two appointments. The first appointment will be used to take measurements of your teeth and mouth, to be able to custom creates the crowns and bridges for a perfect fit. You would be given a temporary restoration that you could use until the next appointment, which is when we will be able to mount your custom dental crown or bridge for you, at our Hampton Park clinic.
